Ancient Mystic Teachings speak of our karmic influences. In reflecting on Mother's Day this month, we are going to unpack our lunar influence - our mother's lineage. Our mother's lineage includes her entire family, tracing back 7 generations. From DNA to emotional blueprints, family genetics, roles, and systems repeat patterns consciously and unconsciously for all of us. As a mother and/or a child of a mother, we can all relate to this concept. Let's break it down.
From the relationships that we choose to engage in to the emotional reactions we display so naturally when under stress, both our strengths and our weaknesses can be identified by looking at our mother's lineage. We literally carry half of our DNA from our mother, and this shows in our appearance, temperament, and behaviors. Scientific research in the area of Epigenetics has shown that certain experiences can influence how genes are expressed throughout generations. When it comes to trauma, abuse, neglect, chronic stress, or other challenges that leave permanent imprints upon us, we pass them on to future generations. At the same time, the ways that our ancestors have endured hardship, adapted, survived, and gained resilience over the years are also passed onto future generations.
Love is learned by the nurturing vessel that gave us life and brought us into this world. We first understand what it means to Love through our mothers. Similarly, our mothers learned through their mothers, and so on. In psychology, the "Attachment Theory" shares that inner security is born from how nurturing and consistent our mothers have been in our lives. We learn this behavior and then carry this into our personal relationships as we grow older. A distant, cold, stressed, or anxious mother will also share these traits with us. The ways that our mothers Loved us as we were growing up helps us learn how to either regulate our emotions and feel safe, or feel unsteady and unstable.
Our mothers also showed us what women are meant to be in this world. A hard-working, driven, professional mother will pass on this mentality, much like a hard-working stay-at-home mom who is the teacher, chef, house-keeper, and disciplinarian does. An addicted, conflicted, and unstable home, versus a successful, affluent, and grounded environment will either create or prevent generations from believing in themselves.
In addition to the areas above, our mother's lineage also shares with us a deep "gut feeling" inside that is beyond our years and experiences. It's a natural inner knowing that comes with our ancestral wisdom and is stored deep within on an energetic and cellular level. It is a natural inner compass and guide moving forward when we are seeking direction.
All humans come with a deep history and a lot of ancestral baggage. In order to not let this define who we are, while keeping the strengths and embracing the Lighter aspects, we have to remember that we get to decide how our destiny plays out. We can always use our free will to change direction whenever we feel we need to. Life is fluid, and we only live once in this body-mind-spirit. There is a cosmic blueprint guiding the way, and all we have to do is show up, listen, and follow the heart. Let's live out our highest potential and make this journey the best one!
